The Find (200-Word Flash-Fiction)

Flash Fiction/Non-Fiction / Sunday, January 14th, 2018

We pressed our ears against the wall, looks of concentration on our dirty faces.

We could definitely hear something.

“Is it a bird’s nest, do you think?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “Doesn’t sound like a bird. Look, there’s a hole. Let’s get that stone, over there.”

We heaved up the stone. Worms, woodlice and earwigs, things we had seen umpteen times before, common things of this world, scuttled in every direction.

We leaned the stone against the wall. I stood on it first.

“What do you see? Anything there?”

“It’s still too high, wait a second.”

On unsteady tiptoes, I peered into the dark, damp hole.

“What do you see?”

“Nothing, it’s too dark.”

“Put your hand in.”

So I did.

“Feel anything?”

“Yeah. I think it’s a nest. Wait a sec, I’ll see if I can pull it out.”

The sound of whatever it was got louder.

Something dislodged in my fingers.

“The sound’s stopped.”

“I know,” I said.

I managed to scoop my hand underneath the nest. I pulled it out slowly.

“What’s in it?”

Shocked, I dropped it.

It shattered.

The small human-like figure, with weak underdeveloped wings, writhed at our feet.

“What shall we do?”
